Education & Training
To become an eye surgeon, a person must complete a four to five year university program in optometry. It must be accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. Many people begin their training with an undergraduate degree in a related field before they progress onto the four to five year optometry program. Once an optometry course is complete, an exam must then be taken for the Canadian Examiners in Optometry. A person also has to get licensed in their province. The purpose of this is to ensure the public will be receiving high quality care. Dr Boyd also has a certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology on top of all of the required education.
Once a person has gained their education, they must complete residency at a hospital or clinic before they can become a fully trained eye surgeon. Dr Boyd completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Ottawa.
Experience
Since Dr Boyd’s education and initial training, he has studied and performed ophthalmic procedures under several leading ophthalmologists in England, Saudi Arabia and the United States. To date he has performed over 25,000 surgical procedures. He is the chief medical director for BoydVision and also a staff surgeon at Burnaby General Hospital.
