PRK for Active Lifestyles: A Safer Option Than LASIK?

When people start researching laser eye surgery, most hear about LASIK first. It’s quick, it’s popular, and the recovery is fast. But if your lifestyle includes a lot of physical activity—or even the risk of getting hit in the face—LASIK might not be your best option. That’s where PRK comes in.

At BoydVision, we sometimes recommend PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) for people with active, high-impact lifestyles like firefighters, military personnel, or construction workers. Let’s look at why.

Why Lifestyle Matters in Eye Surgery

Your daily activities and work environment can affect how safe a laser eye procedure is for you.

Here’s what we mean:

1. PRK Has No Flap – That’s a Big Deal

LASIK involves cutting a thin flap in your cornea. While it usually heals well, that flap never fully reattaches like skin does. That means it can shift if you get hit in the eye—or even rub your eye hard.

If you’re in law enforcement, firefighting, the military, or play sports like martial arts, rugby, or even basketball, this could be risky. PRK doesn’t involve a flap. The surface layer of your cornea is gently removed and grows back naturally, so there’s no flap to dislodge.

2. More Stable Long-Term for Active People

Because there’s no flap, the cornea heals as one solid surface. That makes PRK more structurally stable in the long run, especially for people who move a lot, sweat, rub their eyes, or face unpredictable conditions.

3. Lower Risk of Dry Eyes

PRK is also less likely to cause dry eyes, which can be made worse by wind, heat, or dehydration—things that often come with physical jobs or outdoor activity.

What’s the Catch?

PRK does come with a longer recovery. You’ll need about a week before you can get back to normal routines, and your vision improves gradually over several weeks. But many of our patients say it’s worth the slower start for the long-term peace of mind.

Let’s Talk About Your Eyes

At BoydVision, we don’t recommend a one-size-fits-all solution. We look at your eye health, your goals, and yes—your lifestyle—before recommending LASIK, PRK, or another option like SmartSight (aka SMILE).
