The laser technology used at BoydVision is a state-of-the-art Zeiss MEL 80. One of the chief benefits of the MEL 80 is the speed with which it performs its duties. As this study from 2006 shows, the MEL 80 has consistently delivered superior outcomes in both recovery time and vision correction.

Because it is faster than previous technologies, the procedure takes less time — a confidence-boosting benefit for those who feel the procedure itself may be uncomfortable. It also speeds up recovery time, as the eye isn’t undergoing laser treatment for as long.

An important advantage of the Zeiss MEL-80, is its ability to leave the cornea in a prolate shape, which reduces night vision effects (starburst and halos around lights). This technology is especially welcomed by those who found their night vision to be an issue after treatment with older laser technology. Additional treatment with the new, advanced equipment can overcome the limitations of the previous surgery and improve the quality of night vision.

Another Zeiss product chosen by BoydVision is our wavefront aberrometer – the CRS-Master wavefront analysis unit. A wavefront aberrometer measures any imperfections in the focusing of images inside the eye. Using the wavefront analysis, the information is input into the laser’s computer to produce a custom treatment. Most eyes can benefit from a customized laser treatment – to increase the quality of focus as light travels from the front of the eye to the retina.

Some wavefront analysers use a fairly low level of resolution. The CRS-Master uses the highest resolution of the wavefront analysers available for use by laser eye surgeons. By recording such a high level of information, any customized treatment using the wavefront map produced by the CRS-Master is as precise as possible. Wavefront analysis is also used when providing additional treatment to patients with night vision effects from older laser treatments.
