During your initial consultation to determine if you are a laser
surgery candidate, the examiner will have viewed your wavefront
map. This print-out identifies if a custom treatment is of benefit
to you. Our fee for surgery is not increased if a custom treatment
is recommended. We want you to have the best treatment possible
and see no need to increase the fee for this service. We know you
want what is best, too.
When a custom treatment is being performed, the data from the
wavefront aberrometer is fed into the laser’s computer. Included
in this information are landmarks on the eye for the laser to
identify. The eyes tend to rotate when we lay down, so the
customized treatment must know how much to rotate for best
results. Also, the laser is equipped with an eye-tracker to keep
up with small shifts in gaze that occur during the treatment.

Because the wavefront aberrometer measures distortions in
focusing, it is important that you discontinue wearing contact
lenses at least one week before this measurement is done for
surgery purposes. Some people are unable to go without contact
lenses that long prior to their consultation. In these
circumstances, the wavefront measurement is redone after surgery
is scheduled and the contacts have been removed for the
recommended period of time.
The laser surgery experience is remarkably similar whether it is
wavefront-guided or a traditional treatment. The difference is
only in how the laser spot is guided to and for how long.
Post-operative recovery is the same for both wavefront and
traditional surgeries. The expectation is that the quality of
vision will be better with a wavefront-guided treatment in eyes
that are deemed to be candidates for this type of surgery.
