Other Surgical Options

BoydVision offers a variety of surgical options including both Phakic Implant Surgery and Refractive Lens Exchange to safely treat patients.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Older patients (over 50 - 55 years of age) sometimes are better having intraocular surgery rather than laser vision correction (PRK and LASIK) in order to stop wearing glasses.

There are several reasons for this:

  • Many patients in this age group have dry eye or other corneal problems which make them less than ideal laser candidates.
  • The patients understand the compromise of not having both good distance and near vision after doing PRK or LASIK only
  • The patients would prefer less surgery, and realize by doing refractive lens exchange they won't need cataract surgery later. Also there's less chance of needing laser enhancement procedures in future.

This procedure is like cataract surgery, but done at a private surgical facility (BoydVision). It takes less than an hour to do both eyes with minimal discomfort and very rapid visual recovery.

Phakic Implant

For younger adults (under 40 years of age) who are not candidates for refractive laser surgery such as PRK or LASIK, Phakic Implant surgery is often a viable alternative surgical procedure.

This technology involves inserting an artificial lens into the eye to correct a person's prescription. The procedure usually takes less than 45 minutes for both eyes, and recovery time a few hours. BoydVision uses the Artisan lens which attaches to the iris. The lens can be removed later in life when cataract surgery is needed.

The major advantage of the Phakic Implant is that it is capable of correcting a wide range of nearsightedness, and provides stable refractive outcome and excellent quality of vision.  Another advantage is that the procedure is reversible, and the natural lens is undisturbed so that normal reading vision is maintained.

The long term disadvantages include potential cataract formation and corneal decompensation, and so the patient needs follow-up for many years.
