Custom LASIK
Standard (or conventional) LASIK only corrects refractive error (your prescription in your glasses) but does not fully correct other visual aberrations in your cornea. Especially at night with bigger pupils these residual corneal distortions are magnified, and can detract the quality of your vision.
Custom LASIK uses additional information from the preoperative testing including both topographical and wavefront mapping to give better results. Custom LASIK actually treats a larger part of the cornea (aspheric treatment) which is not possible with standard LASIK without ablating more corneal tissue. Standard treatment does not use this added information and removes tissue less efficiently over a smaller area of the cornea. The excimer laser with custom treatment is programmed to deliver a more complex and efficient ablation pattern to give better quality vision.

Before the Surgery:
Prior to the laser procedure there are various tests that are performed to determine your candidacy for laser eye surgery. Wavefront Aberrometry is used to determine how sharply images are focused inside your eye. Other specialized tests include corneal topography mapping. These maps are useful in detecting some types of corneal pathology and determine your candidacy for LASIK or PRK.
During the Surgery:
At the beginning of the procedure, drops are used to numb the surface of the eye. The cornea is marked with a marking pen and the flap is created. This is done with a ansatome mechanical keratome. It suctions onto the eye for almost 30 seconds during which there is a pressure sensation on the eye and the flap is created. After the keratome is removed, the flap is rolled back and the laser then sculpts the eye. It is a cold laser, which is painless and lasts for about 20-30 seconds. After lasering, the flap is replaced and massaged for a few seconds to prevent wrinkles.
After the Surgery:
Some care must be taken during the first week after surgery with respect to rubbing the eyes (you will be provided with plastic shields to wear over the eyes while sleeping during the first week). During the first few days it is not unusual for vision to fluctuate mildly. Dryness of the eyes is possible following any type of eye surgery. If you experience dry eye symptoms already (i.e. feeling like something is in the eye, or the eyes tiring easily), then it is more likely you will experience increased dryness during the first weeks after surgery. Some people need to continue using artificial tear drops for up to a year. Very few people will have chronic dry eyes indefinitely.
